| I'm just a little kid walking through a big, beautiful world. |
I don't know what your stance is on foreigners. And no, this isn't a blog about the politics of immigration. But I can tell you this much: being in a strange place is hard. I've been in Argentina over a month now, and the most similar feeling I can recall ever having is that of being a small toddler. You don't know how to get around. You have very little power to accomplish tasks that used to be easy, automatic even. you struggle to choke out chunky awkward chopped up sentences that may or may not even make any sense. I knew there would be a learning curve, but I never anticipated the social anxiety I would suffer in the process. I have gained quite a bit of sympathy for anyone so far from home. Many don't even have the help I'm receiving.
Being a kid isn't all bad though. Along with the sense of unfamiliarity and uncertainty that soaks everything in sight, your brain receives a massive influx of curiosity. With curiosity comes a multitude of questions that result in a flood of new knowledge, ideas and of course inspiration.
The advantage of childhood is that you are constantly learning new things. Most adults have learned enough to survive and have settled on that. They've decided what they like and dislike, what they can tolerate and what method they will use to kill the hours of the day. Don't get me wrong, routines can be helpful. Too often though, I feel we become trapped in a prison made of our
own crutches.
I came to Argentina in search of something better. For as long as I can remember, I have always relied on my creativity and my intellect for my entertainment, expression and even my livelihood. They have had such a profound impact on my life that they have defined my identity and directed the course of my existence. My intent in uprooting my life is to refuel those traits, to give them food to feed on, to grow on. To nurture them and to change my life for the better. I've made a promise to myself to keep learning throughout my life, and I intend to honor that promise.
